International Projects Funding Opportunities

Russian Ministry of Education and Science and Russian governmental funds offer a number of grants aimed at developing international joint research projects. 

Here are the main Russian state funds supporting research projects implemented jointly by an international research team and/or under supervision of world leading scientists. Most calls for proposals are announced every year, some of them are not regular and shall be checked on the funds' websites.

Resolution No.220 of the Government of the Russian Federation
In order to strengthen governmental support for the development of science and innovations in tertiary education and to improve the quality of higher education, on April 9, 2010, the Government of the Russian Federation instituted monetary grants that are made available on a competitive basis to support of scientific research projects implemented by the world’s leading scientists at Russian institutions of higher learning.

The call is dedicated to support research projects and establishing international laboratory at Russian institutes of higher education under the supervision of the world’s leading scientist

Amount of funding

90 million rubles (app. 1 250 000 EURO) for 3 years

Duration of the project

3 years (2017-2019) with the possibility of a 2-year extension of the research period

Research directions

(for 2015-2017)

• Natural Science • Technics and Technology, incl. Architecture and Construction

• Fundamental studies for medicine • Agricultural sciences • Humanitarian sciences • Social sciences

KPIs for the leading scientist • H-Index (by Web of Science) • Internationally recognized scientific results • Number of publications inthe period 2011-2016 • Experience in establishing and managing international labs • Experience in scientific supervision of PhD students • Teaching experience
Special requirement to the leading scientist

The leading scientist should manage the project and the laboratory with presence at Russian organization for at least 4 months (120 days) per year in total, the rest of the time management tasks can be performed on the distance

Requirements to the reserach team

• Research team should include at least 2 candidates of science, 3 post-graduate students, 3 under-graduate students • 40% of the whole research team should be aged under 39(including) • The leading researcher and all members of research team  should have official employment or civil agreement with the organization the project is submitted from

Responsibilities of

research team

By the end of the project:

• At least 8 publications authored by the research team members in peer-reviewed journals indexed in WoS and Scopus 

• At least 5 applications for registration of intellectual property objects within the proposed research project area authored by the research team members 

Russian Science Foundation

Calls for proposals dedicated to international research groups include the following competitions for grants in the priority areas of RSF activities:

«Research with the results presented as part of an international conference (congress)»

«Research in small groups under the supervision of leading Russian and foreign scientists»

«Basic research by international research teams»

project team 

• High percentage (35%-50%, depending on the grant) of young researchers aged under 39(including) 

• Research team of Russian and foreign scientists, maximum number of people including the project leader is 7-10 (depending on the grant)

Amount of funding

(for 2015) 

5-10 million rubles (app. 70,000 – 140,000 EURO) per year

Responsibilities of

research team

• From 5 to 12 publications (depending on the grant) authored by the research team members in peer-reviewed journals indexed in WoS and Scopus 

Federal Target Program

The competition is aimed at supporting Russian institutions to implement research project as a part of international consortium within EU framework program Horizon 2020, including ERA.Net initiatives

Amount of funding  30 million rubles (app. 416 000 EURO) for 3 years
Duration of the project 3 years (2017-2019)
Special requirement to projects

The international consortium shall consist of minimum 3 countries from different countries

The topic of the research project shall be within (1) one or several priority in science and technology of the Russian Federation and (2) selected priority topics of the EU framework program Horizon 2020. Here is the selected list of topics for EU-Russia S&T Cooperation 

Only those projects are accepted for funding that have corresponding proposals submitted by the international consortium coordinator to the European Union within the Horizon 2020 program or to the ERA.Net secretariat

International partner's funding share

No less than 50% of the total project funding amount per each year 

Requirements to

project team

• High percentage (33.8%-34.5%) of young researchers aged under 39(including) durnig the three years of the project

• The average age of researchers included in the team is 44.5 years (1st year of the project) - 44 years (2nd year of the project) - 43.4 (3rd year of the project)

Responsibilities of

research team

• At least 6 publications authored by the research team members in peer-reviewed journals indexed in WoS and Scopus

• At least 1 application for registration of intellectual property object within the proposed research project area authored by the research team members
